Sipping Through Time: The History of Happy Hour and  Napa County

Napa County, a world-renowned wine region, has long been a popular destination for wine enthusiasts and tourists alike. As the heart of California’s Wine Country, Napa offers a rich history, stunning landscapes, and a vibrant culinary scene. Among the many reasons to visit Napa, the local happy hour tradition has grown to become a beloved part of the county’s social life and alternative to those who would like to do more than just taste wine. In this blog post, we’ll dive into the history of happy hours in Napa County, uncovering the origins of this time-honored tradition and exploring how it has evolved over the years.

It's Origin Story

The term “happy hour” can be traced back to Shakespeare’s “Henry V” and it was in reference to a happy time period. The term in relation to a scheduled event, began in 1913 when a group of women organized “Happy Hour Social” aboard the Navy’s U.S.S Arkansas for the purpose of socializing, watching pictures shows, boxing matches etc. By June of 1913, the crew of the Arkansas referred to these fun events as happy hours despite the lack of alcohol.

The history of happy hours in Napa County can be traced back to the late 19th century when the region began to establish itself as a wine-producing region thanks to pioneers like John Patchett and Charles Krug. As wineries and vineyards started to flourish, so did the local taverns and saloons. However, with the onset of Prohibition in the 1920s, alcohol consumption became illegal throughout the United States. This posed a significant challenge for Napa County, whose economy was heavily reliant on the wine industry.

In response to these new restrictions, secret speakeasies began to pop up in the region (in Napa the Fagiani building also formally known as Avow). To attract patrons, these underground establishments started offering drink specials and discounted prices during specific hours, further contributing to the development of the happy hour tradition. "There were more places to get a drink illegally during prohibition in downtown Napa then there are today…and there are 5 times the people living here now.”

After Prohibition was repealed in 1933, Napa County’s wine industry began to rebound, and with it, the tradition of happy hours. In the post-Prohibition era, bars, and taverns across the US as well as Napa’s wineries embraced the concept of happy hours as a way to promote their products and attract customers. It was during this time that the term “happy hour” was coined (in relation to consumption), and the tradition began to take shape as we know it today.
